The TEI plays an outstanding role as a first approach towards a standardized representation of annotations. While the standardization of the representation (encoding) of annotations has steadily evolved over the last years, the presentation or visualization of markup and its implications for the usability of markup tools has been treated with significantly less attention. In many cases the representation of markup and its actual presentation to the user are but the same thing: plain text (original text) and markup tags (annotation) at the code level.
