Abstract (English)

The present work deals with the mineralization of alkaline-earth carbonates (mainly barium carbonate) from dilute silica solutions at high pH. It has for long been known that the concerted interaction between these purely inorganic components leads to amazing architectures with intricately curved and helical shapes, which were termed silica-carbonate biomorphs. Recently a general concept was proposed by García-Ruiz and co-workers that explains the spontaneous formation of these biomimetic aggregates on basis of pH-mediated interactions of the silica and carbonate speciations at alkaline conditions. In this way, the building units of biomorphs are continuously produced via chemically coupled co-precipitation of components, that is, crystallization of carbonate provokes the precipitation of silicate and vice versa. Therefore studies conducted in the scope of this work were on the one hand dedicated to reinforce and advance the already existing picture of the formation mechanism (chapter 3-5, and 7) and, on the other, to shed light on certain morphogenetic aspects (chapter 6).

Die vorliegende Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Mineralisation von Erdalklicarbonaten (hauptsächlich Bariumcarbonat) aus silikathaltigen Lösungen bei hohem pH. Es ist schon seit langem bekannt dass das konzertierte Zusammenwirken dieser rein anorganischen Komponenten zu faszinierenden Architekturen mit stark gekrümmten and helikalen Formen führt, die als sogenannte „Silika-carbonate biomorphs“ bekannt sind. Kürzlich wurde ein allgemeines Konzept von García-Ruiz und seinen Mitarbeitern vorgeschlagen, das die spontane Entstehung dieser biomimetischen Aggregate auf der Basis pH von gekoppelten Wechselwirkungen zwischen der Silikat und Carbonat Spezies unter den gegebenen alkalischen Bedingungen erklärt. Dabei bewirkt die Kristallisation von Carbonat –Partikeln einen Abfall des pH-Wertes an der Wachstumsfront, was in situ zum Ausfallen einer Silikatschicht um einzelne, nanoskalige Bausteine führt. Dies resultiert wiederum in einer Erhöhung des lokalen pH Wertes und regt so zu einer erneuten Nukleation von BaCO3 an. Letztlich wird ein autokatalytischer Prozess induziert, der direkt mit der alternierenden Mineralisation der Komponenten verbunden ist. Ziel der vorliegenden Dissertation war es einerseits die Theorie der pH-vermittelten Kopplung zwischen der Silikat- und Carbonat Spezies zu erweitern und letztlich auch Beweise für ihre Gültigkeit zu finden (Kapitel 3-5 und 7). Auf der anderen Seite wurden auch zentrale morphogenetische Fragestellungen untersucht (Kapitel 6).
