Zusammenfassung
Der Schwerpunkt der im Rahmen dieser Dissertation durchgeführten Studien liegt da-rauf, die mentale Rotation bezüglich ihrer beiden Transformationen, objektbasiert und egozentrisch, in Hinblick auf zwei Aspekte zu untersuchen: 1) Den Entwicklungsverlauf und 2) Die Beteiligung motorischer Prozesse. Die mentale Rotationsfähigkeit wird als eine spezielle visuell-räumliche Fähigkeit verstanden, zwei- oder dreidimensionale Ob-jekte im Geiste zu drehen (Linn & Petersen, 1985). Bei mentalen Rotationsaufgaben werden zwei Arten von Strategien voneinander abgegrenzt: objektbasierte und ego-zentrische Transformationen. Im Rahmen von objektbasierten Rotationen bleibt die Position des Beobachters unverändert, während egozentrische Transformationsaufga-ben erfordern, dass der Proband seine eigene Perspektive verändert und sich in die Position des Stimulus hineinversetzt. Dies führt dazu, dass ein simulativer Rotations-prozess des eigenen Körpers in Gang gesetzt wird (Devlin & Wilson, 2010; Kessler & Rutherford, 2010). Objektbasierte Rotationen entstehen durch eine gleich/gespiegelt-Antwort, während bei egozentrischen Transformationen meist das Bild eines menschli-chen Körpers dargeboten wird, der entweder den linken oder rechten Arm ausstreckt. Hierbei soll eine Entscheidung über die Lateralität getroffen werden, sei es, ob es sich um den linken oder den rechten Arm handelt.
Die erste Studie dieser Untersuchungsreihe unterzog sich der Fragestellung, ob sich objektbasierte und egozentrische Transformationen bezüglich ihres Entwicklungsver-laufes unterscheiden. Mittels eines einheitlichen Designs wurden drei Altersgruppen miteinander verglichen: Kinder (8-11 Jahre), Erwachsene (18-25 Jahre) und Senioren (60-71 Jahre). Die Ergebnisse legten nahe, dass sich eine reduzierte Leistungsfähigkeit sowohl bezüglich der Reaktionszeit als auch hinsichtlich der Rotationsgeschwindigkeit bei Senioren und Kindern im Vergleich zu jungen Erwachsenen einstellte, wobei neben der mentalen Rotationsfähigkeit folgende drei Faktoren als ursächlich in Erwägung gezogen werden müssen: 1) Arbeitsgedächtnis, 2) Informationsverarbeitungsgeschwin-digkeit und 3) sensomotorische Prozesse. Der Vergleich egozentrischer und objektba-sierter Performanz ergab, dass ausschließlich Kinder Defizite in der egozentrischen Bedingung aufwiesen. Da diese Transformationsart eine perspektivische Transformati-on im Sinne einer motorischen Simulation erfordert, wurde geschlussfolgert, dass die Motorik einen ausschlaggebenden Faktor darstellen könnte. Diese Interpretation stell-te die Grundlage für die zweite Untersuchung dieser Arbeit dar, die das Ausmaß der Beteiligung motorischer Prozesse bei den beiden Transformationsarten zum Schwer-punkt des Interesses machte.
Im Rahmen der zweiten Studie galt es, die beiden Transformationsarten hinsichtlich der Beteiligung motorischer Prozesse vor dem Hintergrund des Embodiment-Ansatzes zu beleuchten. Unter Embodiment (dt. = Verkörperung) versteht man, dass der Geist (d.h. Verstand, Denken, das kognitive System, die Psyche) immer in Bezug zum gesam-ten Körper steht (Storch, Cantieni, Hüther, & Tschacher, 2010). Ziel der zweiten Unter-suchung war es, herauszufinden, ob die beiden Transformationsarten unterschiedlich stark verkörpert sind. Diese Forschungsfrage wurde anhand des Einflusses von zwei Variablen untersucht: 1) Motorische Fähigkeiten und 2) Das eigene Körperbild. Demzu-folge wurden Sportler und Nicht-Sportler miteinander verglichen, um den Grad der motorischen Expertise zu variieren und damit die unterschiedlich starke Verwendung motorischer Ressourcen bei der Aufgabenbearbeitung zu überprüfen, die nach Moreau (2012) von Sportlern verstärkt herangezogen werden. Zur Bestimmung des Ausmaßes der Verkörperung durch die Präsentation eigener und fremder Körperbilder legen so-wohl behaviorale Befunde (Ferri, Frassinetti, Costantini, & Gallese, 2011) als auch neu-roanatomische Evidenzen (Tsakiris, 2010) nahe, dass die Verarbeitung eigener Körper-bilder an motorische Prozesse gekoppelt ist. Die Ergebnisse der Studie 2 wiesen nach, dass Sportler besser abschnitten als Nicht-Sportler und sich dieser Leistungsvorteil aus-schließlich in der egozentrischen Transformation einstellte. Bezüglich des Stimulusma-terials zeigte sich ein „Selbst-Nachteil“ in objektbasierten Rotationen, der auf ressour-cen-einnehmende Selbstaufmerksamkeitsprozesse zurückgeführt wurde. Um Auf-schluss über diesen potenziellen Erklärungsansatz zu erhalten, wurde dasselbe Experi-ment mit diversen Manipulationen durchgeführt und stellte die Grundlage für die drit-te Studie dieser Untersuchungsreihe dar.
Änderungen, die an der zweiten Studie vorgenommen wurden, dienten dazu, zwei Fra-gestellungen zu adressieren: 1) Erhöht die Verwendung lebensgroßer Stimuli die in Studie 2 gefundenen Embodiment-Effekte? und 2) Sind Selbstaufmerksamkeitsprozes-se verantwortlich für den in der zweiten Studie nachgewiesenen „Selbst-Nachteil“? Letztere wurde mittels der Durchführung einer zusätzlichen Wiedererkennungsaufga-be untersucht, in der eigene Körperfiguren von denen fremder Personen abgegrenzt werden mussten. Die Ergebnisse der dritten Studie wiesen Verkörperungseffekte infol-ge der Manipulation des Stimulusmaterials nach, dabei schienen vorwiegend objektba-sierte Rotationen zu profitieren. In dieser Bedingung wirkte sich die Verkörperung be-züglich der Beteiligung motorischer Fähigkeiten positiv im Sinne eines Rotationsvorteils aus. Der negative Einfluss des eigenen Körperbilds aus Studie 2 schien in der objektba-sierten Bedingung durch Verkörperungseffekte kompensiert zu werden, während in der egozentrischen Transformation erstmals ein direkter „Selbst-Vorteil“ zu verzeich-nen war. Dennoch befürworteten die Ergebnisse der Wiedererkennungsaufgabe die Annahme, dass die gefundenen nachteiligen Effekte der Verarbeitung eigener Körper-bilder aus Studie 2 auf ressourcen-einnehmende Selbstaufmerksamkeitsprozesse zu-rückzuführen sind.
Zusammenfassend unterstreichen die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungsreihe die Be-deutung der Stimulusgröße als „Verkörperungs-Medium“ und betonen, dass die men-tale Rotation ein Konstrukt ist, das weitere kognitive Determinanten wie das Arbeits-gedächtnis sowie die Informationsverarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit umfasst, die in Zu-kunft verstärkt als „verkörperte Kognitionen“ wahrgenommen und dementsprechend in der Forschung aufgegriffen werden sollten.

The aim of the current work is contributed to the investigation of two types of transformations in mental rotation, specifically object-based and egocentric ones. The key idea is to analyze both transformation types with regard to two distinct aspects: 1) the developmental change and 2) the involvement of motor processes. Mental rotation is a specific visuo-spatial ability which involves the process of imagining how a two- or three-dimensional object would look if rotated away from its original upright orientation (Linn & Petersen, 1985). In a classic chronometric mental rotation task two stimuli are presented simultaneously on a screen. The left stimulus servers as the “comparison object” presented in upright orientation, and participants have to decide as fast and accurately as possible if the rotated right stimulus represents the same object or a mirror-image of the left object. In mental rotation there are two different classes of mental transformation strategies, which seem to represent different cognitive operations: object-based and egocentric transformations. Whereas in object-based transformations the observer’s position remains fixed, in egocentric transformation tasks participants are asked to mentally change their own perspective. Thus, they have to imagine rotating their own body in order to make a decision, which is a simulative process (Devlin & Wilson, 2010; Kessler & Rutherford, 2010). Object-based transformations are usually induced by a “same-different” decision, whereas egocentric conditions consist of the presentation of a single human figure outstretching one arm (left or right). Here, participants are required to judge laterality.
The first study of this work was arisen by the question, whether object-based and egocentric transformations differ in their developmental change. Based on the results of performance differences in children, adults and the elderly being only less comparable due to methodological discrepancies, the following three age groups were compared regarding their performance in object-based and egocentric transformations in a unique design: children (8-11 years), adults (18-25 years) and the elderly (60-71 years). Against the background of developmental- and age-related impairments in working memory and information processing speed, slower reaction times and a reduced mental rotation speed were expected for both children and the elderly compared to adults. Regarding performance differences between object-based and egocentric transformations existing literature argues for an advantage of egocentric ones, whereas in childhood evidence is still inconsistent. Results of this first study revealed a reduced performance of children and the elderly in overall reaction times and mental rotation speed compared to adults, which might be contributed to three several developmental- and age-related changes in three functions: 1) working memory; 2) information processing speed; 3) sensorimotor processes. The comparison of object-based end egocentric transformations showed that exclusively children showed impaired performance in the egocentric condition. This result could be interpreted by the fact that the body schema of children is not fully developed at this age which is assumed to play an important role in perspective transformations. The association between the own body und motor processes as part of the simulative process being required in egocentric transformations provided a basis of the second study of this work: Do object-based transformations and egocentric rotations differ in the involvement of motor processes? To which extent is the own body related to motor processes and accordingly to both types of transformations?
The second study was conducted to investigate the involvement of motor processes in both transformation types against the background of the embodiment-approach. The key idea of this renewed viewpoint is that many cognitive processes, which were formerly defined as purely “cognitive”, are also deeply rooted in body-related experiences with the environment (Storch, Cantieni, Hüther, & Tschacher, 2010). Therefore, the second study was conducted to examine if object-based and egocentric transformations differ in their extent of being embodied. Based on the previous literature egocentric rotations are supposed to be embodied to a greater extent since here a perspective transformation is required, while object-based rotations are analogous to the manual rotation of an object. The investigation of this issue included the recruitment of motor experts vs. non-motor experts to alternate the degree of motor expertise. Hence, we predicted that motor-experts should outperform non-motor experts especially in egocentric transformations which are assumed to be more embodied (Steggemann, Engbert, & Weigelt, 2011). Furthermore, by analyzing stimuli using the own versus another person’s body, we wanted to examine if the embodiment is more distinct in egocentric transformations than in object-based rotations. We expected that a self-advantage resulting in faster reaction times and a higher accuracy is more pronounced for egocentric transformations, and less pronounced or even reversed for object-based transformations (Ferri, Frassinetti, Costantini, & Gallese, 2011). The results of this study showed that experts outperformed non-motor experts regarding reaction time, but only in the egocentric condition. Furthermore, results revealed a benefit of the representations of another person’s body, but only for the object-based transformation task. This finding was contributed to self-related thoughts, which distract attentional resources primarily required for solving the mental rotation task. However, this other-advantage diminishes in egocentric transformations, which could be interpreted as indirect self-advantage suggested by the existing literature. To ensure this hypothetic explanation approach the same design of the second study was replicated with two types of manipulations serving as basis for study 3 of this work.
Adaptations of study 2 were driven to address the following questions: 1) Does the use of life-size figures as stimulus material enhance embodiment-effects provided by the second study? and 2) Is the self-disadvantage found in object-based rotations consequence of increased self-awareness-consciousness distracting attention-demanding resources? The first issue was addressed by presenting life-size figures as stimulus material. The latter issue was investigated by adding a recognition task which required the participants to differentiate between one`s own vs. another person’s body. Results of study 3 showed that the manipulation of the stimulus size by presenting life-size figures induced stronger embodiment-effects compared to study 2. Especially object-based transformations seemed to benefit from this manipulation. Here, regarding the influence of motor expertise the manipulation led to a performance-advantage of motor experts, which did not occur in study 2. Regarding the influence of the self, the self-disadvantage in the object-based condition disappeared and a first explicit self-advantage in the egocentric transformation was found. The self-disadvantage could be contributed to a negative self-processing since self-stimuli were related to higher reaction times compared to other-stimuli in the recognition task. This leads to the assumption that attention-demanding resources play an important role in the interpretation of the self-disadvantage in study 2 and 3.
Summarizing all results of the present work, stimulus size seems to be an important tool to induce embodiment-effects. Furthermore, the findings imply that mental rotation is a cognitive ability, where also working memory and processing speed seem to be involved. Consequently, these cognitive resources should be perceived and treated as „embodied cognitions“ to a greater extent in future investigations.
