Abstract (English)

In this thesis, structural and electronic effects accompanying electron transfer reactions in individual molecules and ordered molecular structures are investigated by means of scanning probe microscopy.
The geometrical changes upon charging of individual copper(II)phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on an ultrathin NaCl layer on a supporting Cu(100) substrate were studied by means of AFM. Making use of charge bistability, we image individual molecules subsequently in their neutral and anionic state and analyze the differences in image contrast due to charging. The observed contrast differences and supporting density functional theory simulations allow us to elucidate the geometrical changes of a molecule upon charging.
Further, we investigated self-assembled molecular islands in an insulating environment by means of AFM. By using the AFM tip as a tunable gate, the charge state of the molecular islands was probed and manipulated with single electron control, to gain insight into the distribution of excess electrons within the islands and the role of mutual charge interactions. Depending on the charge state, the we observe stable electron distributions or intra-island electron hopping. This intra-island charge transfer is driven by a local effect of the oscillating tip. From the simultaneous occurrence of charge transfer related features in frequency shift and dissipation of the AFM cantilever we estimate the intra-island tunneling rates. Further, an electrostatic model was used to simulate the probe-dependent electron distribution within an island and rationalize the observed image contrast for specific charge states.
Individual perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and self-assembled PTCDA islands adsorbed on few monolayer thin NaCl films on a supporting conductive substrate were studied by means of scanning probe microscopy. We found that molecules can be switched in both cases by applying voltage pulses. We investigate the changes in the electronic structure and geometric changes upon switching, which indicate that the switching is related to the charging of a molecule. These experiments suggest that the charge is localized at the functional group of a molecule instead of occupying the LUMO. A tentative mechanism for this charge stabilization is proposed based on a strong polaronic interaction with the ionic NaCl surface due the spatial confinement of the excess electron at a molecule’s functional group.

In dieser Arbeit werden strukturelle und elektronische Effekte bei Elektronentransferreaktionen in einzelnen Molekülen und geordneten Molekülstrukturen, mittels Rastersondenmikroskopie untersucht.
Die geometrischen Änderungen bei der Umladung einzelner Kupfer(II)phthalocyanin-Moleküle auf zwei Monolagen NaCl auf einem Cu(100) Substrat wurden mittels Rasterkraftmikroskopie untersucht. Unter Ausnutzung von Ladungsbistabilität bilden wir einzelne Moleküle nacheinander in ihrem neutralen und anionischen Zustand ab und analysieren die Unterschiede im Bildkontrast infolge der Aufladung. Mit Hilfe von unterstützenden Dichtefunktionaltheorie-Simulationen konnten die beobachteten Kontrastunterschiede einer Änderung der geometrischen Struktur eines Moleküls bei Änderung des Ladungszustands zugeschrieben werden.
Weiterhin wurden selbstassemblierte molekulare Inseln auf einer isolierenden Oberfläche mittels Rasterkraftmikroskopie (AFM) untersucht. Unter Verwendung der AFM-Spitze als variables Gate wurde der Ladungszustand der molekularen Inseln detektiert und manipuliert, um Einblicke in die Verteilung zusätzlicher Elektronen innerhalb der Inseln und die Rolle von Ladungswechselwirkungen zu gewinnen. Je nach Ladungszustand konnten stabile Elektronenverteilungen oder Elektronentransfer zwischen einzelnen Molekülen einer Insel beobachtet werden, welcher durch einen lokalen Einfluss der oszillierenden Spitze zustande kommt. Anhand der Auswirkung des Landungstransfers auf die Frequenzverschiebung und Dämpfung des AFM Sensors konnte die Rate des intermolekularen Ladungstransfers abgeschätzt werden. Weiterhin wurde ein elektrostatisches Modell verwendet, um die von der Spitzenposition abhängige Elektronenverteilung für bestimmte Ladungszustände zu simulieren und den beobachteten Bildkontrast zu erklären.
Einzelne Perylen-3,4,9,10-Tetracarbonsäuredianhydrid Moleküle (PTCDA) und selbst-assemblierte PTCDA Inseln auf dünnen NaCl-Filmen auf einem Au(110) Substrat wurden mittels Rastersondenmikroskopie untersucht. In beiden Fällen konnten die Moleküle durch Anlegen von Spannungspulsen geschaltet werden können. Die beobachteten Änderungen in der elektronischen Struktur und geometrische Veränderungen beim Schalten deuten darauf hin, dass das Schalten mit der Aufladung eines Moleküls zusammenhängt. Das zusätzliche Elektron scheint dabei an einer funktionellen Gruppe eines Moleküls lokalisiert zu sein, anstatt das LUMO zu besetzen. Als möglichen Mechanismus für diese Ladungsstabilisierung schlagen wir eine starke polaronische Wechselwirkung mit der ionischen NaCl-Oberfläche durch die starke räumliche Lokalisierung des zusätzlichen Elektrons an einer funktionellen Gruppe eines Moleküls vor.
