The thematic apperception test (TAT; Heckhausen, 1963) is a proven instrument for assessing the implicit achievement motive. Here people are instructed to invent stories based on 6 pictures, which are subsequently analyzed using a specific coding system regarding the two components of hope of success and fear of failure. Thus, the quality of the measurement essentially depends on the category system. The aim of the present study was to extend the Heckhausen coding key by the category sureness and certainty of success (Kategorie Erfotgssicherheit und -gewissheit, ESG) and to validate it. The evaluation objectivity, test-retest reliability (delay: 4 weeks), and internal consistency were assessed with and without consideration of ESG. Discriminant and convergent validity by compliance with other measurement methods and factorial validity using confirmatory factor analysis were assessed on 215 pupils. A specific motive arousal of 130 pupils was used to test the experimental validity. The results indicate that the quality criteria of the TAT can be increased by ESG.
