Abstract (English)
This book-length study examines the importance of the concept of NEWNESS in American presidential discourse, with a focus on the inaugural address as a major institutionalised form of public address on the American political calendar. Throughout its seven themed chapters, this doctoral thesis reconceptualises the inaugural as an epideictic genre with the dual function of cultural transmission and political renewal. In line with constructivist theorising on meaning, it is argued that the very concept of NEWNESS furnishes considerable ideological potential which is used strategically in the inaugural address to build a communicative memory. After setting the stage, in chapter 1, for an account of American political discourse that is shaped by the appropriation of newness to construct an identity as a ‘new nation’ of the ‘new world’, chapter 2 goes on to expose the interdisciplinary nature of political discourse in laying the foundations for a dynamic conception of meaning representation in discourse as the product of individual and collective mental processes. Chapter 3 moves on to track the development of the concept of NEWNESS against the backdrop of the generational cycles of American national history, focusing on the important notion of ‘covenant’. Covenant theology became one of the cornerstones of the American tradition of public oratory, which itself has been reported to be one of the main contributing factors to the rise of the ‘rhetorical presidency’.
Chapters 4 to 6 form the centrepiece of the qualitative analysis of NEWNESS as a powerful lexical and conceptual resource in framing American presidential discourse. The conceptual domain of NEWNESS is fully fleshed out in chapter 4, which begins by outlining its conceptual history and subsequently highlights its importance as a cognitive cultural model. When encoded in a language-specific format, for example as the adjective new, the analysis revealed that the meaning potential of new clustered around two major semantic subsets: Newness may, on the one hand, be understood in terms of time and origin or may be expressed in terms of kind and quality on the other. Not only do these construals highlight the lexical concept’s polysemy, they also demonstrate that the meaning potential of new is grounded in temporal and spatial cognition. As such, the cognitive domain of NEWNESS is metaphorically structured and is conceptually linked to the concept of CHANGE. Cognitively, both are united in the complex system of the Event Structure Metaphor (ESM), whose central mapping is the conceptual metaphor CHANGE IS MOTION. In chapter 5, the inaugural address, which makes up the database of the present study, is introduced as a specific genre of presidential speech, including its main communicative functions, and followed by a reconceptualisation of the inaugural address as an epideictic genre. Prior to the in-depth qualitative analysis of the entrenchment of NEWNESS in the American presidential inaugural address, the analytical procedures are established. The analysis in chapter 6 had two main objectives: It first involved examining the construal of NEWNESS in presidential discourse on the basis of all nineteenth-century and twentieth-century inaugural speeches. The second part aimed at uncovering the mechanisms of how this particular construal may contribute to the representation of ideological discourse structures on both the sentence and textual levels.
Results showed that, while in nineteenth-century inaugurals the construal of NEWNESS chiefly serves to encode specific participant roles, such as the American nation as an agent, the sentential event schemas identified in the twentieth-century speeches tend to invoke the contrast between the categories OLD and NEW by means of antonym construal. This patterning gives rise to antagonistic frames, which assign positive values to ‘new’ and negative values to ‘old’. The analysis of larger portions of discourse revealed that meaning representation in the inaugural address largely occurs on the basis of motion concepts, including the conceptual metaphor CHANGE IS MOTION as the central mapping of the ESM. As shown, these metaphorical frames help entrench ideological structures, which operate both locally and globally in presidential discourse by expressing opposing value judgements about the presence or absence of CHANGE and NEWNESS, respectively. The thesis concludes that the concept of NEWNESS provides a powerful conceptual frame for what may be considered the inaugural’s most crucial rhetorical function, that is, the transmission of core values of the American public philosophy or civil religion. Conceptual metaphor proved to be a suitable analytical tool for identifying the knowledge structures that underpin political cognition, entrenched as cognitive models in which information about beliefs, values and social practices is stored.

Die vorliegende Studie hat das Konzept NEWNESS in der amerikanischen politischen Rhetorik zum Gegenstand und untersucht es anhand des spezifischen Genres Antrittsrede innerhalb der präsidentiellen Rhetorik amerikanischer Präsidenten. Antrittsreden, die sog. Inaugural Addresses, sind eine der wichtigsten institutionalisierten Formen der öffentlichen Ansprache im amerikanischen politischen Kalender. In theoretischer Hinsicht ist die Arbeit daher in der Diskursforschung verortet; methodisch werden diskursanalytische Verfahren mit denen der konzeptuellen Metapherntheorie und der Frame-Semantik verknüpft. Mittels der daraus resultierenden Kritischen Metaphernanalyse wird die diskursive Konstruktion von Kontinuität – das Alte – und Wandel – das Neue – in den Antrittsreden des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts untersucht. Die Antrittsrede wird abschließend als epideiktisches Genre mit der doppelten Funktion der kulturellen Weitergabe und der politischen Erneuerung neu bestimmt. Mit der konstruktivistischen Bedeutungstheorie wird argumentiert, dass das Konzept NEWNESS selbst ein beträchtliches ideologisches Potenzial bietet, das in Antrittsreden strategisch genutzt wird, um das kulturelle Gedächtnis zu stärken.
Die vorliegende Dissertationsschrift umfasst sieben Kapitel und ist folgendermaßen gegliedert. In Kapitel 1 wird der amerikanische politische Diskurs dargestellt. Dieser erweist sich als von der Aneignung von Neuheit geprägt, um die Identität als „neue Nation“ der „neuen Welt“ zu konstruieren. In Kapitel 2 wird in Abgrenzung zu Begriffen wie „Politische Sprache“ oder „Politische Kommunikation“ für die Notwendigkeit einer interdisziplinären Bearbeitung der Fragen nach der dynamischen Konzeption von Bedeutungskonstituierung im politischen Diskurs als dem Produkt individueller und kollektiver mentaler Prozesse plädiert. Kapitel 3 zeichnet die Entwicklung des Konzepts NEWNESS vor dem Hintergrund der Theorie der Generationszyklen in der amerikanischen Nationalgeschichte nach, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf dem Begriff des „Bundes“ liegt, der den Übergang von einer Generation zu nächsten sicherstellt. Die Bundestheologie ist eng verbunden mit der amerikanischen Tradition der öffentlichen Rede und gilt als einer der Hauptfaktoren für die Entwicklung und heutige Bedeutung der „rhetorischen Präsidentschaft“.
Die Kapitel 4 bis 6 bilden den Kern der qualitativen Analyse von NEWNESS als einer lexikalischen und konzeptuellen Ressource zum framing des amerikanischen Präsidentendiskurses. Die kognitive Domäne von NEWNESS wird in Kapitel 4 detailliert dargestellt und deren Bedeutung als kognitives kulturelles Modell auf der Basis der Ideengeschichte des Neuen herausgearbeitet. Als lexikalische Ressource zeigt sich das Konzept NEWNESS sprachspezifisch beispielsweise als Adjektiv neu, dessen Bedeutungspotenzial sich zwei semantischen Teilmengen zuordnen lässt, wobei das Neue zum einen zeitlich und in Bezug auf die Herkunft oder zum anderen in Bezug auf Art und Qualität ausgedrückt wird. Bei der sprachlichen Realisierung des jeweiligen Bedeutungspotenzials wird aus dem Repertoire möglicher Versprachlichungen die bestmögliche Passung ausgewählt – ein Phänomen, das R. W. Langacker als „construal“ bezeichnet. Die unterschiedlichen möglichen Versprachlichungen von NEWNESS unterstreichen nicht nur dessen Polysemie, sondern zeigen auch, dass das Bedeutungspotenzial von NEWNESS in zeitlicher und räumlicher Kognition begründet ist. Darüber hinaus konnte herausgearbeitet werden, dass die kognitive Domäne von NEWNESS metaphorisch strukturiert und kognitiv mit dem Konzept des Wandels (CHANGE) verbunden ist. Konzeptuell vereint sind beide im komplexen System der Event Structure Metapher (ESM), zentral hierfür ist die kognitive Metapher CHANGE IS MOTION. In Kapitel 5 wird die Antrittsrede, die die Datenbasis der Studie bildet, für die Zwecke der Untersuchung als epideiktische Genre eingeführt sowie das methodische Vorgehen begründet und erläutert. Die Präsentation der Ergebnisse der qualitativen Analyse ist Gegenstand von Kapitel 6. Während in den Amtsantritten des 19. Jahrhunderts die Versprachlichung von NEWNESS hauptsächlich dazu dient, spezifische thematische Rollen, wie zum Beispiel die amerikanische Nation als Agens, zu kodieren, werden in den Reden des 20. Jahrhunderts die Kategorien ALT und NEU als Gegensätze kontrastiert, wie es sich in den identifizierten Satzereignisschemata mit zumeist antonymischer Bedeutungskonstituierung zeigt. Aus diesem wiederkehrenden Muster an selektiver Versprachlichung entstehen Schemata auf Basis antagonistischer frames, die dem Neuen eine positive und dem Alten eine negative Wertigkeit zuschreiben. Die Analyse größerer Diskurseinheiten wiederum zeigt, dass die Bedeutungskonstituierung in der Antrittsrede weitgehend auf der Grundlage von Bewegungskonzepten erfolgt, darunter die kognitive Metapher CHANGE IS MOTION. Diese metaphorisch strukturierten frames tragen dazu bei, ideologische Strukturen zu verankern, die sowohl lokal als auch global im präsidentiellen Diskurs wirken, indem sie gegensätzliche Werturteile über das Vorhandensein oder Nichtvorhandensein von Wandel bzw. Neuheit zum Ausdruck bringen.
Im 7. und letzten Kapitel wird zusammenfassend geschlussfolgert, dass das Konzept NEWNESS einen prägenden frame für eine wesentliche rhetorische Funktion der Antrittsrede bietet, nämlich die Vermittlung von zentralen Werten der sog. amerikanischen Zivilreligion als säkularisierter Form der Bundestheologie. Die kognitive Metapher erweist sich methodisch als geeignetes analytisches Instrument zur Identifizierung solcher Versprachlichungsmuster, die der politischen Kognition zugrunde liegen und in denen Informationen über Überzeugungen, Werte und soziale Praktiken abgespeichert sind. Darüber hinaus können diejenigen Mechanismen aufgedeckt werden, die es ermöglichen, bei der Versprachlichung von Ereignissen je nach Wahl der Detailliertheit und Perspektive diese sprachlich so zu konstruieren, dass es zur Herausbildung ideologischer Diskursstrukturen sowohl auf Satz- als auch auf Textebene kommen kann.
