Abstract (German)

In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wird untersucht, warum sich der Ukrainekrieg zu einem toxischen Krieg (1) hoher Intensität, (2) langer Dauer und (3) großer Eskalationsgefahr entwickelt hat. Dies wird bei Nichtberücksichtigung anderer Variablen dadurch erklärt, dass der Ukrainekrieg ein interkultureller Konflikt im Sinne von Samuel P. Huntingtons Theorie des „Kampfs der Kulturen“ (engl. „Clash of Civilizations“) ist. Ein Konflikt ist diesem kulturrealistischen Ansatz zufolge interkulturell, wenn Konfliktparteien aus zwei unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen aufeinandertreffen. Huntington kennt zwei Formen interkultureller Konflikte, die zu Kriegen eskalieren können: Bruchlinienkonflikte mit intensivem Identitätsbezug an den Grenzen zwischen Kulturkreisen und Kernstaatenkonflikte zwischen dominanten Mächten verschiedener Kulturkreise. Der Ukrainekrieg lässt sich der Arbeit zufolge nicht als Bruchlinienkonflikt bzw. -krieg einordnen, der sich an der Grenze zwischen zwei Kulturkreisen zwischen zwei Konfliktparteien, die unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen angehören, abspielt, denn die Ukraine und Russland stehen sich kulturell zu nahe, auch wenn die Ukraine als orthodoxes Land westlicher beeinflusst ist als der orthodoxe Kernstaat Russland. Es wird jedoch wird aufgezeigt, dass bei erweiterter Betrachtungsweise, die die Unterstützer der Ukraine einbezieht, ein interkultureller Konflikt in Form eines Kernstaatenkonflikts vorliegt. Dieser wird indirekt und direkt ausgetragen zwischen Russland und dem Kernstaat des Westens, den USA, denen sich fast die gesamte westliche Welt angeschlossen hat, während die übrigen Kulturkreise hauptsächlich abseits stehen.
Daneben weist der Ukrainekrieg im Verhältnis zwischen Russland und der Ukraine einen starken Identitätsbezug auf, weil die Konfliktparteien auf kulturelle Gegenstände aus den Bereichen Religion, Sprache und Geschichte intensiv Bezug nehmen, womit er sich als kultureller Konflikt innerhalb des orthodoxen Kulturkreises darstellt. Dazu wurden Politikerreden, aber auch aktuelle Publikationen und Medienberichterstattung über die Politiken beider Kriegsparteien ausgewertet. Auf der Ebene der Identität geht es gerade darum, ob die kulturell gespaltene Ukraine zum Westen oder russisch dominierten orthodoxen Kulturkreis gehören soll. Auch auf interkultureller Ebene zwischen dem Westen und Russland finden sich gegenständlich kulturelle Bezüge, im weiteren Sinne gehört dazu ein Konflikt zwischen liberal-demokratischen und traditionalistisch-autoritären Werten und Institutionen.
Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird auch überprüft und bestätigt, dass der Ukrainekrieg in dreierlei Beziehung ein toxischer Krieg ist. Er ist im statistischen Vergleich ein Krieg relativ langer Dauer. Die hohe Intensität des Kriegs wird anhand der vergleichsweise hohen Opferzahlen in Relation zur Kriegsdauer objektiviert. Die Eskalationsgefahr wird anhand der Vielzahl an diskutierten Eskalationsszenarien als hoch bewertet.
Die Kausalität zwischen der Interkulturalität und der toxischen Ausprägung des Kriegs wird anhand von vier theoretischen Begründungen Huntingtons untersucht und als vertretbar erachtet: In der Tat lassen sich nämlich ein starker (1) Identitätsbezug, (2) Hass und die (3) Schwierigkeit der Verhandlungslösung im Ukrainekrieg bejahen, insbesondere aber das sogenannte (4) Rallying, das durch Zu-Hilfe-Eilen kulturell verwandter Gruppen und Länder den Krieg verlängert, intensiviert und gefährlich macht. Am Schluss der Arbeit wird vor Interventionen des Westens in andere Kulturkreise und einer Eskalation der aktuellen kriegerischen Entwicklungen zu einem Dritten Weltkrieg gewarnt.

Translation of the abstract (English)

In the present master's thesis, an examination is conducted on why the conflict in Ukraine has evolved into a toxic war characterized by (1) high intensity, (2) prolonged duration, and (3) a significant risk of escalation. This is explained, disregarding other variables, by positing that Ukraine is experiencing an intercultural conflict in the sense of Samuel P. Huntington's theory of the "Clash of Civilizations." According to this cultural realist approach, a conflict is considered intercultural when conflicting parties arise from two distinct civilizations. Huntington identifies two forms of intercultural conflicts that can escalate into wars: fault line conflicts with intense identity connections at the borders between civilizations, and core state conflicts between dominant powers of different civilizations. According to the thesis, the Ukraine conflict cannot be classified as a fault line conflict or war taking place at the border between two civilizations involving conflicting parties from different cultural backgrounds because Ukraine and Russia are culturally close, even though Ukraine as an Orthodox country is influenced more by Western values than the Orthodox core state Russia. However, it is demonstrated that, from a broader perspective that includes supporters of Ukraine, an intercultural conflict in the form of a core state conflict is present, indirectly and directly contested between the Russia and the Western core state, the United States, with almost the entire Western world aligning itself, while other civilizations mainly remain detached.
Additionally, the Ukraine conflict exhibits a strong identity connection in the relationship between Russia and Ukraine, as the conflicting parties extensively reference cultural elements from the realms of religion, language, and history, presenting itself as a cultural conflict within the Orthodox cultural sphere. This analysis is based on politicians' speeches, current publications and media coverage of the policies of both warring parties. At the level of identity, the conflict is precisely about whether the culturally divided Ukraine should belong to the West or the Russian-dominated Orthodox civilization. On an intercultural level between the West and Russia, tangible cultural references are found as well, encompassing a conflict between liberal-democratic and traditionalist-authoritarian values and institutions.
Within the scope of the thesis, it is also examined and confirmed that the Ukraine conflict is a toxic war in three respects. It is relatively prolonged in duration when compared statistically. The high intensity of the war is substantiated by comparatively high casualty figures in relation to the duration of the conflict. The risk of escalation is deemed high based on the multitude of discussed escalation scenarios.
The causality between interculturality and the toxic nature of the war is explored through four theoretical justifications derived from Huntington and deemed plausible: namely, a strong (1) identity connection, (2) hatred, and the (3) difficulty of negotiating a solution in the Ukraine conflict, especially the so-called (4) rallying by culturally related groups and countries, which prolongs, intensifies, and renders the war dangerous. At the end of the thesis, a warning is issued against interventions by the West into other civilizations, as well as the escalation of the current wars and tensions into a Third World War.
