Abstract
The freshwater fauna (crustaceans, molluscs, fish) of many tropical islands in the Caribbean and Pacific share an amphidromous life-cycle, meaning their larvae need to develop in saline conditions before returning to freshwater as juveniles. This community dominates the freshwaters of much of the tropics, but is poorly known and at risk from development, in particular dam construction. Amphidromy can theoretically lead to dispersal between different freshwater areas, even to distant oceanic islands, via the sea. The extent and scale of this presumed dispersal, however, is largely unknown in the Caribbean. Recent genetic work in Puerto Rico has shown that many freshwater species have little or no population structure among different river catchments, implying high levels of connectivity within an island, whereas between-island structure is unknown. We used genetic techniques to infer the geographic scales of population structure of amphidromous invertebrates (a gastropod and a number of crustacean species) between distant parts of the Caribbean, in particular Puerto Rico, Panama and Trinidad. We found virtually no geographic population structure across over 2000km of open sea for these freshwater species. This implies that they are indeed moving between islands in sea currents as larvae, meaning that continued recruitment requires a continuum of healthy habitat from the freshwater to marine environment. We further discuss the role of amphidromy and suggest its ecological and biogeographic role may be more important than previously presumed. Resumen La fauna de agua dulce (crustaceos, moluscos, peces) de algunas islas tropicales en el Caribe y Pacifico comparte un ciclo de vida anfidromo, lo que significa que deben desarrollar sus larvas en condiciones salinas antes de volver al agua dulce como juveniles. Esta comunidad domina las aguas dulces de gran parte de los tropicos, pero es poco conocida y en riesgo de no poder continuar completando su ciclo vital, en particular, por a la construccion de represas. Debido a la relacion con el mar, este proceso de anfidromia teoricamente puede conducir a la dispersion entre las distintas areas de agua dulce a traves del el oceano, lo cual parece probable para islas oceanicas lejanas. Sin embargo, el alcance y la magnitud de esta aparente dispersion son desconocidos en el Caribe. Estudios geneticos recientes llevados a cabo en Puerto Rico mostraron que muchas especies de agua dulce tienen poca o ninguna estructura poblacional entre diferentes cuencas fluviales, lo que implica altos nivele de conectividad dentro de una isla, mientras que entre islas la estructura es desconocida. Nosotros utilizamos tecnicas geneticas para inferir las escalas geograficas de la estructura poblacional de invertebrados anfidromos (un gasteropodo y algunas especies de crustaceos) entre partes distantes del Caribe, en particular, Puerto Rico, Panama y Trinidad. No se encontro practicamente ninguna estructuracion geografica en las poblaciones separadas por mas de 2000km de mar abierto para estas especies de agua dulce. Esto implica que en realidad las diferentes poblaciones de estas especies estan en movimiento en forma de larvas entre islas mediante las corrientes marinas. La persistencia de un reclutamiento continuo de estas especies requiere la existencia de habitat saludable que mantenga la conexion entre los ecosistemas de agua dulce y marinos. Tambien discutimos el papel de la anfidromia y sugerimos que su papel ecologico y biogeografico puede ser mas importante de lo que se presume.
