Blood culture sampling is indispensable for detection of microorganisms in the blood of patients with symptoms of systemic infectious disease. Optimal informative value depends on factors during the preanalytical and analytical period of blood culture analysis. To ensure optimal sensitivity and specificity as well as timely results, it is recommended to gain at least two blood culture sets by different aseptic venipunctures. Within laboratory processing the intention is to shorten the period between detection of growth in blood culture bottles and identification and susceptibility testing of microorganisms. For this purpose, mass spectrometry and molecular procedures are applied.
