Photolysis of Aqueous [Os(NH3)5(N2)]2+. Photoreduction of Coordinated Dinitrogen to Hydrazine as a Model for a New Type of Artificial Photosynthesis?

Kunkely, Horst ; Vogler, Arnd

Abstract

In the absence of oxygen the photolysis of [Os(NH3)(5)(N-2)](2+) leads to the reduction of the N-2 ligand according to [Os-II(NH3)(5)(N-2)](2+) + H2O -> [Os-VI(NH3)(4)](3+) + N2H4 + OH-. The photochemical formation of hydrazine from N-2 is discussed with regard to the photochemical conversion and storage of solar energy.
