Large tracts of lowland and foothill landscape in the bimodal rainfall, eastern Fynbos Biome of South Africa lack an overstorey of nonsprouting, serotinous Proteaceae (proteoids). Scattered stands of proteoids in the grassy fynbos that dominate these landscapes suggest that proteoids have the potential to be more widespread. Here, we assessed whether interactions between the resprouting graminoid (predominantly C4 grasses) understorey and the proteoid overstorey could explain the sparseness of proteoids in grassy fynbos. We quantified postfire seedling growth and graminoid cover for three proteoid (Protea) species in beneath-proteoid canopy and open microsites at sixteen locations in the eastern Fynbos Biome. Contrary to studies undertaken in proteoid fynbos west of our study area, we found no consistent differences between graminoid cover and growth of proteoid seedlings in beneath-canopy and open microsites. Nor did we find consistent negative relationships between graminoid cover and seedling growth. We conclude that graminoid-proteoid interactions do not explain the sparseness of proteoids in the eastern Fynbos Biome.Resume De grandes etendues de plaines et de pentes montagneuses beneficiant d'un rythme pluvial bimodal dans le Biome de Fynbos de l'Est, en Afrique du Sud, n'ont pas d'etage superieur de Proteaceae (proteoides) serotineuses ne produisant pas de rejets. Des ilots de proteoides eparpilles dans le fynbos herbeux qui domine ces paysages laissent penser que ces proteoides ont la capacite de s'etendre davantage. Nous evaluons ici si les interactions entre l'etage inferieur de graminees qui rejettent (en majorite des graminees C4) et l'etage superieur proteoide pourraient expliquer la rarete des proteoides dans le fynbos herbeux. Nous quantifions la croissance des jeunes plants apres les feux, ainsi que le couvert graminoide de trois especes de proteoides (Protea), dans des microsites sous canopee proteoide ou ouverts dans 16 emplacements du Biome de Fynbos de l'Est. Contrairement aux etudes sur les proteoides du fynbos a l'ouest de notre aire de recherche, nous ne trouvons aucune difference constante entre le couvert graminoide et la croissance de jeunes pousses proteoides entre microsites sous canopee et ouverts. Nous n'avons pas trouve non plus de relations negatives constantes entre le couvert graminoide et la croissance des jeunes pousses. Nous en concluons que les interactions graminoides-proteoides n'expliquent pas la rarete des proteoides dans le biome de Fynbos de l'Est.
