There is a continuously increasing need, due to demographic development, for materials and biomaterials which are suited for the maintenance of teeth and even for dental prostheses. Attention is mainly focused here on materials which present appropriate physicochemical, mechanical, and biological characteristics and, therefore, significantly improve the quality and longevity in the fields of minimal invasive prophylaxis, filling therapy, dental prosthetic surgery, and implantology. It is only via a combination of various microscopic examination methods that it becomes possible to investigate and characterize a structure-property correlation in detail. Hence, it permits to achieve optimum functionality parameters of such materials in order to obtain dental materials with optimum properties.
