Therapy of ulcers includes both treating the ulcer itself and the underlying disease. Local or surgical wound therapy depends on the phase of the wound healing. Physiological wound healing can occur in three phases: the cleansing phase, the granulation phase and the epithelialization phase. The choice of the optimal therapy also depends on degree of secretion, bacterial contamination and anatomical location, as well as size and depth of the wound. While dry wound therapy was favoured until some years ago, moist wound therapy is well-established today There are a large number of modern wound dressings for local, phase-dependent or phase-independent ulcer therapy, making the optimal treatment of each kind of chronic wound possible.
