The fluorescence quantum distribution, fluorescence quantum yield and degree of fluorescence polarisation of a LiF:F-2(-) crystal is measured at room temperature by standard fluorimetric techniques. The fluorescence lifetime is determined by femtosecond laser pulse excitation and fast photodetector-oscilloscope detection. The stimulated emission cross-section spectrum is extracted from the radiative lifetime and the fluorescence quantum distribution. The effective stimulated emission cross-section spectrum is extracted from picosecond pump and probe experiments. The results indicate negligible excited state absorption in the fluorescence spectral region. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
