Abstract
What kind of university does society need?
1. A sovereign university open to society: Universities that not only develop valid but also relevant knowledge, that not only impart specialized knowledge but also train reflective experts, must keep their borders open to society. Then both can irritate and stimulate each other: The sciences can question the reasonableness of established social practices, and social actors and the political public can critically examine the relevance and direction of research and education.
2. a discursive and democratic university: Universities require a pronounced openness of internal communication in which external expectations are processed and internal processes and structures are discussed and reflected upon. It is appropriate for an academic institution to clarify processes, structures, and strategies in an argumentative discourse that allows for the participation of all its members and requires democratic structures.
3. a diverse university: The university must adequately represent the breadth of society. Both the validity and the relevance of research findings depend on this. An understanding of the different social milieus and fields of action is also necessary for the formation of reflective experts, to which teachers and students can contribute. The intensive diversity discourse at universities is necessary and needs to be deepened with regard to social background as an underexposed and at the same time most consequential discrimination factor.
What kind of society does the university need?
The university, for its part, needs a society that takes an interest in its university, safeguards its independence, respects academic freedom, and at the same time addresses its expectations and knowledge needs to the university, names biases, and articulates doubts about academic findings. In short, a society that communicates with science and does not seek to control it primarily through power and money.
Without a civic clarification of where it should go, the potential of science remains aimless. Without scientific clarification of what happens if nothing happens, which goals are achievable and which paths are feasible, the social debate lacks an important element of rationality. Only in combination can action be taken that deserves to be called rational.

Welche Universität braucht die Gesellschaft?
1. Eine souveräne und gesellschaftsoffene Universität: Universitäten, die nicht nur gültiges, sondern auch relevantes Wissen erarbeiten, die nicht nur Fachwissen vermitteln, sondern reflektierte Expertinnen und Experten ausbilden sollen, müssen ihre Grenze zur Gesellschaft weit offenhalten. Dann können sich beide irritieren und anregen: Die Wissenschaften können die Vernünftigkeit eingelebter sozialer Praktiken hinterfragen, gesellschaftliche Akteure und politische Öffentlichkeiten die Relevanz und Ausrichtung von Forschung und Bildung kritisch thematisieren.
2. Eine diskursive und demokratische Universität: Universitäten benötigen eine ausgeprägte Offenheit der inneren Kommunikation, in der sowohl externe Erwartungen verarbeitet als auch interne Prozesse und Strukturen thematisiert und reflektiert werden. Einer wissenschaftlichen Einrichtung angemessen ist es, Prozesse, Strukturen und Strategien in einem von Argumenten bestimmten Diskurs zu klären, der die Beteiligung aller ihrer Mitglieder ermöglicht und demokratische Strukturen erfordert.
3. Eine diverse Universität: Die Universität muss die Breite der Gesellschaft ausreichend widerspiegeln. Sowohl die Gültigkeit und als auch die Relevanz von Forschungserträgen hängen davon ab. Auch für die Bildung reflektierter Expertinnen und Experten ist ein Verständnis der verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Milieus und Handlungsfelder erforderlich, zu dem Lehrende und Studierende beitragen können. Der intensive Diversitätsdiskurs an Universitäten ist notwendig und im Hinblick auf die soziale Herkunft als unterbelichtetem und zugleich folgenreichstem Diskriminierungsfaktor zu vertiefen.
Welche Gesellschaft braucht die Universität?
Die Universität ihrerseits braucht dazu eine Gesellschaft, die an ihrer Universität interessiert ist, ihre Unabhängigkeit sichert, Wissenschaftsfreiheit achtet und zugleich ihre Erwartungen und ihren Wissensbedarf an die Universität adressiert, Einseitigkeiten benennt und Zweifel an wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen artikuliert. Kurz: eine Gesellschaft, die mit der Wissenschaft kommuniziert und sie nicht primär durch Macht und Geld zu steuern sucht.
Ohne bürgerschaftliche Klärungen, wo es hingehen soll, bleibt das Potenzial der Wissenschaft ziellos. Ohne wissenschaftliche Klärungen, was passiert, wenn nichts passiert, welche Ziele erreichbar und welche Wege gangbar sind, fehlt der gesellschaftlichen Debatte ein wichtiges Rationalitätselement. Nur in der Verbindung kann ein Handeln entstehen, das es verdient, vernünftig genannt zu werden.
