Background: Radiotherapy as a local treatment modality is an integral part of curative or palliative interdisciplinary concepts in the treatment of malignant melanoma.Aims: The current status or radiotherapy modalities for various indications in the management of malignant melanoma is presented.Materials and methods: Relevant publications on treatment results of radiotherapy were summarized in a narrative review. Results: Postoperative radiotherapy of the lymphatic region improves regional tumor control in the presence of defined risk factors. Palliative radiotherapy of extracranial, especially bone metastases reduces symptom burden. Stereotactic radiotherapy of brain metastases or postoperatively of the resection cavity achieves high rates of local control. Conclusion: Modern radiotherapy provides an important, situation-specific contribution to multimodal treatment concepts of melanoma.
