Abstract (English)
This thesis explores the need for ethical responsibility within technology and science so as in order to keep up with the opportunities and risks of progress thereof. It further identifies a core motivation of this responsibility. For the first time this is done by analyzing and comparing the interdisciplinary research works of Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Ian Graham Barbour, two physicists who became philosophers discovering Critical Realism. Both differ regarding epistemological issues such as the understanding of progress and reality, as well as their respective philosophical and theological views on issues of peace and justice, their understanding of creation and sustainable technology. The research explores the backgrounds of their views on progress mainly deriving from the works of Karl Popper, Hans Jonas, and Georg Picht; Weizsäcker’s and Barbour’s understandings of creation as well as the roots of these mainly with Teilhard de Chardin´s view on evolution. Weizsäcker’s concepts of reality were mainly influenced by Martin Heidegger, Werner Heisenberg, and Georg Picht; and Barbour’s concepts of these same concerns have philosophical roots mainly with Alfred North Whitehead, Charles Hartshorne, Richard Niebour as well as with the process theological roots of John Cobb and David Griffin. Furthermore, their points of view on justice, peace, and sustainability are compared as they emerge from Weizsäcker’s reading of Georg Picht’s and Pinchas Lapide’s insights into Hellenistic and early-Jewish concepts of justice as well as Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s concepts of a secularized religion and radical ethics; Barbour’s reception of Nicholas Rescher’s and John Rawl’s understanding of justice as well as his reception of ecumenical-Christian points of view on post Cold-War global security and peace also have an influence. These explorations result in an account of Weizsäcker’s and Barbour’s ethics affecting technological and scientific progress. Their ethics are holistic with respectful love as their motivating force. Through task responsibility, accountability and reparation these ethics succeed in dealing with the consequences and (in-)direct effects of progress for a sustainable future of humankind. (Fortschrittsfolgenethik respektvoll-ganzheitlicher Liebe). Their ethics are directed towards an ultimate goal (Weizsäcker) or chances and opportunities for intermediate goals (Barbour). As they see it, our growing ethical responsibility must be accompanied by (Barbour), or directed towards (Weizsäcker), the eternal one. It is only with the dimension of an ongoing creating designer, i.e. GOD, that they succeed in offering sufficient hope: a historically open, thereby non-eschatological hope (Barbour); and respectively, one which is eschatological, thus the final hope for the future (Weizsäcker).

Diese Arbeit untersucht den Bedarf für ethische Verantwortung im Technologie- und Wissenschaftsbereich, um so den darin liegenden Chancen und Risiken gerecht zu werden. Die Arbeit lässt auch eine zentrale Motivationskraft für diese Verantwortungsübernahme erkennbar werden. Erstmalig wird dieses Untersuchungsziel verfolgt anhand von Analyse und Vergleich disziplinübergreifenden Wissenschaftsarbeiten von Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker und Ian Graham Barbour, zwei Physiker, die sich auch zu Philosophen entwickelten und zu Vertretern des Kritischen Realismus wurden. Beide unterscheiden sich in erkenntnistheoretischen Auffassungen wie im Verständnis von Fortschritt und Wirklichkeit, sowie ihre zugehörigen philosophischen und theologischen Sichtweisen auf Fragen zu Frieden und Gerechtigkeit, ihr Verständnis von Schöpfung und nachhaltiger Technologie. Die wissenschaftliche Arbeit untersucht die Hintergründe ihrer Fortschrittssicht, die sich v.a. von Karl Popper, Hans Jonas und Georg Picht herleiten; Weizsäckers und Barbours Schöpfungsverständnisse mit deren Wurzeln v.a. bei Teilhard de Chardins Sicht der Evolution. Weizsäckers Konzeptionen der Wirklichkeit wurden v.a. von Martin Heidegger, Werner Heisenberg und Georg Picht beeinflusst. Barbours diesbezügliche Konzepte haben ihre philosophischen Hauptwurzeln in Alfred North Whitehead, Charles Hartshorne, Richard Niebour zusammen mit processtheologischen Bezügen (John Cobb and David Griffin). Darüber hinaus werden ihre Positionen zu Gerechtigkeit, Frieden und Nachhaltigkeit verglichen, wie sie sich aus Weizsäckers Rezeption von Georg Pichts and Pinchas Lapides Einblick in hellenistische and antik-jüdische Gerechtigkeitskonzepte ergeben, ergänzt durch Dietrich Bonhoeffers Konzepte säkularisierter Religion mit seiner radikalen Ethik.
Auch Barbours Rezeption von Nicholas Reschers und John Rawls Gerechtigkeitsverständnis zusammen mit seiner Verarbeitung ökumenischer christlicher Positionen zu globaler Sicherheit und Frieden in der Phase nach dem Kalten Krieg sind von Einfluss. Diese Arbeitsergebnisse münden in einer Zusammenstellung der Ethik Weizsäckers und Barbours für technologischen und wissenschaftlichen Fortschritt. Ihre Ethiken sind ganzheitlich und haben respektvolle Liebe als grundlegende Motivationskraft. Mit Handlungs-, Rechenschafts- und Wiedergutmachungs-Verantwortung auf der Basis ganzheitlicher Liebe gelingt diesen Ethiken erfolgreicher Umgang mit den Konsequenzen und (in-)direkten Effekten von Fortschritt für eine nachhaltige Menschheitszukunft (Fortschrittsfolgenethik respektvoll-ganzheitlicher Liebe). Ihre Ethiken sind ausgerichtet auf ein letztes Ziel (Weizsäcker) oder auf Chancen und Gelegenheiten zu Zwischenzielen (Barbour). Nach ihrer Auffassung muss unsere wachsende ethische Verantwortung einhergehen mit (Barbour), oder ausgerichtet sein auf Unendliches (Weizsäcker). Nur mit der Dimension eines anhaltenden Designer-Schöpfers, i.e. GOTT, gelingt es beiden, genügend Hoffnung anzubieten: eine geschichtlich offene und damit nicht-eschatologische Hoffnung auf Zukunft (Barbour) bzw. eine eschatologische, somit letztendliche Hoffnung (Weizsäcker).
