Three-dimensional topological insulators exhibit conducting Dirac surface states while their bulk remains insulating. In real samples, however, surface and bulk channels contribute to transport simultaneously, so Hall and longitudinal resistance cannot be directly assigned to individual channels. This thesis investigates magnetotransport in a strained HgTe layer, which forms a three-dimensional topological insulator and onto which a gate-defined one-dimensional lateral lattice is imposed. To this end, a double-gate structure was realized for the first time entirely on top of the sample. A stripe gate and a planar top gate above it together set the periodic modulation potential and the carrier density, so that modulation strength and Fermi-level position can be tuned independently during the experiment. The focus of the investigation is on Weiss oscillations (commensurability oscillations), which arise in the low-field regime whenever the cyclotron orbit diameter becomes commensurate with the lattice period. From the magnetic-field positions of the oscillation minima, the semiclassical flat-band condition provides the carrier density of the channel that couples to the modulation. The transport contributions can thus be assigned to individual channels. Pronounced Weiss oscillations appear in the bulk band gap and in the conduction band. Their minima agree with the carrier density of the top surface obtained from Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, demonstrating that the topological surface states of the top surface couple to the modulation potential. Upon entering the conduction band, the oscillation amplitude decreases, consistent with additional screening of the modulation potential by bulk electrons. A notable result of this thesis is the first observation of Weiss oscillations in the valence band of an HgTe-based topological insulator. The effective carrier densities extracted there agree neither with the carrier densities from Hall measurements and the Drude model nor with those from the Shubnikov-de Haas analysis. To describe this behavior, three model approaches were put forward, two of which were evaluated in simulations while the third constitutes a hypothesis. In the first model, the electrons of the topological surface states and the holes of the valence band are treated as mutually independent channels, each with its own carrier density and hence its own oscillation period, whose modulation-induced conductivity contributions add up. This reproduces the experimental minima positions in the valence band only insufficiently. The second, phenomenologically motivated model assumes that not the total hole density but an effective difference density of hole and electron densities governs the periodicity of the Weiss oscillations, which corresponds to a partial compensation of electron and hole contributions and reproduces the observed minima positions considerably better. The third approach rests on the hypothesis that the hole-like states of the valence band split into several subsystems that couple to the lateral modulation potential with different strengths, such that only a portion of the hole density shapes the Weiss oscillations. In summary, the system cannot be described by any single one of these models, whereas a combination of all three approaches appears plausible.
