A no. of m- and p-substituted Ala-Ala-anilides were enzymically hydrolyzed by dipeptidyl peptidase IV. The catalytic consts., log kcat, are pos. related to Hammett's s-values. In another approach, the electronic effects were represented by the components of dipole moment vectors resulting from quantum chem. calcns. Conformation anal. based on the correlation of log kcat with these parameters points to the steric situation of the transition state between the tetrahedral intermediate and the acylation step.
