Abstract

These are notes for the series of lectures on torsion for families" I gave at the workshop
¯bre bundles and higher torsion" in GÄottingen in 2003. The notes are basically a summary of the
original article [BL] by Bismut and Lott, together with some introductory and motivational remarks.
