Abstract (English)

The topic of this PhD thesis is to investigate the relationship between motor and cognitive skills in children. In particular, the mental rotation ability, which captures the visuo-spatial skills, is considered in the light of neurological disorders and training influences. Children with the neurological disease “spina bifida” demonstrate poorer spatial skills compared to healthy children. The causes of this are not yet fully understood. It is believed that rather the “spina bifida” and the associated motor impairments are responsible for the reduced spatial abilities than the comorbidity hydrocephalus. Based on this assumption it was shown that the reduced spatial abilities in these children are due to the disease “spina bifida” and are not associated to the occurring hydrocephalus. Assuming that, a motor training to improve spatial skills was conducted with these children. Using a juggling training it could be demonstrated that a motor intervention in children with spina bifida leads to a positive influence on mental rotation performance. Additionally, the involvements of other cognitive processes, particularly working memory processes, were considered with regard to the relationship between mental rotation and motor abilities.

Thema dieser Arbeit ist es, den Zusammenhang von motorischen und kognitiven Fähigkeiten bei Kindern zu untersuchen. Insbesondere wird die mentale Rotationsfähigkeit, welche das visuell-räumliche Vorstellungsvermögen erfasst, unter dem Aspekt von neurologischen Erkrankungen und damit verbundenen Trainingseinflüssen betrachtet. Kinder mit der neurologischen Erkrankung „spina bifida“ weisen, im Vergleich zu gesunden Kindern, schlechtere räumliche Fähigkeiten auf. Dabei sind die Ursachen hierfür bisher nicht eindeutig geklärt. Es wird angenommen, dass die „spina bifida“ und die damit verbundenen motorischen Beeinträchtigungen und nicht die vorliegende Begleiterkrankung Hydrozephalus ursächlich für diese verminderten räumlichen Fähigkeiten ist. Basierend auf dieser Annahme konnte zunächst gezeigt werden, dass die verminderten räumlichen Fähigkeiten bei diesen Kindern auf die Erkrankung spina bifida zurückzuführen sind und nicht mit dem einhergehenden Hydrpcephalus in Verbindung stehen. Davon ausgehend wurde ein motorisches Training zur Verbesserung der räumlichen Fähigkeiten mit diesen Kindern durchgeführt. Mit Hilfe eines Jongliertrainings konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass eine motorische Intervention bei Kindern mit spina bifida einen positiven Einfluss auf die mentale Rotationsleistung hat. Weiterführend wurde die Beteiligung von weiteren kognitiven Prozessen, insbesondere von Arbeitsgedächtnisprozessen, bei dem Zusammenspiel von mentalen Rotationsfähigkeit und motorischen Prozessen betrachtet.
