In dieser Arbeit stelle ich das webbasierte, interaktive Textanalysewerkzeug „To See or Not to See“ zur quantitativen Dramenanalyse vor. Damit werden vierzehn Shakespeare-Dramen auf nicht-lineare Weise visualisiert und dem Nutzer datengetriebene Auswertungen angezeigt. Die Datengrundlage bilden die digital annotierten Texte der „Folger Digital Library“ in einem TEI-konformen Format. Diese statische Repräsentation der Dramen wird mithilfe von XSLT automatisch in ein HTML-Dokument transformiert. Auf diesem Weg wird eine neue Darstellungsform eines anderweitig linearen Texts erzeugt. Durch Anwendung weiterer Webtechniken wie JavaScript wird aus dieser neuen Darstellungsform ein interaktives Werkzeug. Mit diesem können bestimmte Aspekte der Texte genauer betrachtet werden. Dazu gehören dessen Abschnitte (Akte und Szenen), Figuren und Bühnenanweisungen. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf quantitativen Aspekten, weshalb Graphen und Diagramme benutzt werden, um diese darzustellen. Die Fokussierung auf quantitative Aspekte von Dramen ist im „Distant Reading“ begründet. Diese Methode nutzt Daten als Mittel zum Erkenntnisgewinn, wobei dieser nicht auf Einzeltexte sondern größere Textgruppen abzielt. Die Erstellung von Werkzeugen zählt in den Digital Humanities seit jeher zu den Kernaktivitäten. Herausforderungen, Probleme und Lösungsansätze, die im Zusammenhang mit der Erstellung einer Software wie „To See or Not to See“ zum „Distant Reading“ auftreten, werden hier diskutiert.

Translation of the abstract (English)

In this thesis I present the web-based and interactive text analysis tool To See or Not to See which visualizes 14 of Shakespeare’s works in a non-linear way and offers the user data-driven visualizations. It is based on digitally annotated texts by the Folger Digital Library in a TEI-conform format. These static representations of the texts are automati-cally transformed to HTML using a XLST. The transformation leads to a new way to visualize otherwise linear text. Combined with standard web techniques like JavaScript this representation becomes an interactive tool that allows to inspect certain features of the plays like acts, scenes, characters and stage directions. There is a strong interest in quantitative aspects. Therefore graphs and diagrams are used to display the underlying data of the plays. The interest in numeric information is based on the Distant Reading methodology. It emphasizes the importance of data as a means to generate knowledge not only about a single but a whole group of texts. Building digital tools in order to find new ways of doing research has always been a core activity in the Digital Humanities. The challenges and difficulties of building a tool like To See or Not to See for Distant Read-ing are explored later in this thesis.
