Abstract (English)

This study deals with the rhetorics and the pragmatics of communication of the suffragists and the anti-suffragists in the debate on the women’s right to vote in the U.S.A during the Progressive Era, 1865-1919.
My analysis of the suffragists and anti-suffragists rhetoric is centered on three aspects. Their respective self-understanding, their understanding of rights and liberalism as well as of progress of reason. I use texts from famous suffragists and anti-suffragists to illustrate these aspects. In so doing, I aim at showing how the Enlightenment served as a communicative and rhetorical basis of the women’s suffrage debate. Furthermore, I would like to shed light on the fact that suffragists — history’s winners — but also the anti-suffragist anchored their self-understanding and their ideology in an Enlightenment-based practice of communication. This juxtaposition of the two debating camps illustrates that the Enlightenment in the U.S.A. served not only as an instrument for emancipation but also for the discrimination of certain social groups, as shown in this study, using the example of white middle class women.

In dieser Studie untersuche ich die Rhetorik und Textpragmatik der Suffragetten und Antisuffragetten in der Debatte über das Frauenwahlrecht in den USA in der Zeit des Progressivismus, also zwischen 1865 und 1919. Mein Fokus liegt hierbei auf die Kommunikationspragmatik der Debatte sowie auf Aspekten der Rhetorik der Suffragetten und der Antisuffragetten. Meine Analyse der suffragetischen und antisuffragetischen Rhetorik wird auf drei Aspekte gebaut. Erstens, ihr jeweiliges Selbstverständnis, ihr Verständnis von Rechten und Liberalismus sowie vom Fortschritt der Vernunft. Als argumentatives Beweismaterial verwende ich Texte berühmter Suffragetten und Antisuffragetten. Dadurch möchte ich zeigen, wie die Aufklärung als rhetorische und kommunikative Basis in dieser Debatte diente. Zweitens wird die Tatsache betrachtet, dass sowohl die Suffragetten – die Gewinner der Geschichte – als auch die Antisuffragetten ihr Selbstverständnis und ihre Ideologie in aufklärerischen Prinzipien und einer aufklärerischen Kommunikationspraxis verankerten. Durch diesen Vergleich soll illustriert werden, dass die Aufklärung in den U.S.A. nicht nur der sozialen Emanzipation diente, sondern auch für die argumentative Ausgrenzung bestimmter Gesellschaftsgruppen instrumentalisiert wurde, wie in dieser Studie anhand der weißen Frauen der Mittelschicht gezeigt wird.
