Abstract (English)
This dissertation is divided into three main sections. The first section gives an overview of the chant books from the city and diocese of Trier. The oldest surviving antiphoner from Trier Cathedral, Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480, forms the focal point of this thesis. This part of the dissertation gives a description of not only Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480, but also nine other primary sources used in this paper. The description includes an explanation of the bindings, the illustration found in the source, an overview of the offices contained in the source, as well as an outline of the scribal characteristics. This section also offers an overview of the notation in the chant books from the diocese of Trier, as well as a summary of fragmentary sources.
The second and third sections focus on the Trier liturgy and its chant. Section two provides an insight into the liturgical calendar of Trier, focusing on the development that took place in the Trier cathedral liturgical calendar (as reflected in the Sanctorale of Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480 (fourteenth century), and Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nrs. 498a and 498b (fifteenth century)), as well as a comparison with the antiphoners from other cities located in the diocese of Trier.
Section three concerns the liturgical music written for new local saints from the city of Trier and the diocese of Trier. Seven local saints, specific to the city of Trier, were identified: Matthias, the apostle who took the place of Judas Iscariot (24 February); Maximinus, fifth Bishop of Trier (29 May); Simeon, hermit (1 June); Helena, mother of Constantine the Great (18 August); Paulinus, sixth Bishop of Trier (31 August); Maternus, third Bishop of Trier (14 September); and Eucharius, first Bishop of Trier (9 December). A further eight saints, venerated in the diocese of Trier, were identified in order to provide points of comparison. They are (in chronological order): Castor, priest and Patron of Koblenz on the Rhine (13 February); Goar, priest (6 July); Oswald, King of Northumbria (5 August); Remacle, Bishop of Maestricht (3 September); Gorgonius, martyr (9 September); Willibrord, Bishop of Utrecht and Apostle of Frisia (7 November); Florinus, priest (17 November); Barbara, martyr (4 December). This section will offer an overview of textual and musical characteristics that have been identified and used to establish the compositional date of a specific Proper Office. These textual and musical characteristics are applied to the office chants of the seven local saints from the city of Trier, as well as to the office chants of the eight saints venerated in the diocese of Trier. It gives a survey of the musical development in the local office chants from the diocese of Trier and places it in the broader European context. Through the musical analysis and the transcriptions of the fifteen local offices, the dissertation contributes to the research tradition of the liturgical veneration of the saints, especially that of the later office repertories and specifically those sung at Trier Cathedral.

Diese Dissertation ist in drei Hauptteile untergliedert. Der erste Teil gibt einen Überblick über die liturgischen Handschriften des Trierers Doms und der Diözese Trier. Die Handschrift Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480, ist das älteste Antiphonar des Trierers Doms und steht im Zentrum dieses Studiums. Dieser Teil der Arbeit gibt eine Beschreibung nicht nur von der Handschrift Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480, sondern auch der neun anderen Handschriften, die als zusätzliche, primäre Quellen dieser Dissertation aufgeführt sind. Die Beschreibung beinhaltet eine Erläuterung über den Handschriftenumschlag, der Abbildungen aus den Quellen, einen Überblick der Offizien der Quellen, sowie eine Übersicht der Schreibmerkmale. Dieser Teil beinhaltet außerdem eine Übersicht der Notation in den Handschriften der Diözese Trier, sowie eine Zusammenfassung der fragmentarischen Quellen.
Teil zwei und drei fokussieren sich auf die Trierer Liturgie und dessen Gesänge. Der zweite Teil bietet einen Einblick in den liturgischen Kalender von Trier, fokussierend auf die Entwicklung, die in dem liturgischen Kalender des Doms stattgefunden hat (wiedergespiegelt im Sanctorale von Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 480 (14. Jahrhundert) und Trier, Bistumsarchiv, Ms. Nr. 498 und 498b (15. Jahrhundert)). Zudem findet sich ein Vergleich mit den Handschriften anderer Städte, die aus dem Umkreis der Diözese von Trier stammen.
Der dritte Teil bezieht sich auf die liturgische Musik, welche für die lokalen Heiligen der Stadt und der Diözese Trier geschrieben wurde. Sieben lokale Heilige konnten der Stadt Trier zugeordnet werden: Matthias, der Apostel, der den Platz von Judas Iskariot eingenommen hatte (24 Februar); Maximinus, fünfter Bischof von Trier 2829 Mai), Simeon, ein Einsiedler (01 Juni); Helena, Mutter von Konstantin dem Großen (18 August); Paulinus, sechster Bischof von Trier (31. August); Maternus, dritter Bischof von Trier (14. September); Eucharius, erster Bischof von Trier (9. Dezember). Acht weitere Offizien für Heilige, die in der Diözese Trier verehrt werden, wurden ebenfalls identifiziert und dienen als Vergleich. Sie sind (in zeitliche Abfolge): Castor, Pfarrer und Schutzpatron Koblenz (13. Februar); Goar, Pfarrer (6. Juli); Oswald, König des angelsächsischen Königreiches Northumbria (5. August); Remacle, Bischof von Maastricht (3. September); Gorgonius, Märtyrer (9. September); Willibrord, Bischof von Utrecht und Apostel der Friesen (7. November); Florinus, Pfarrer (17. November); Barbara, Märtyrerin (4. Dezember). Dieser Teil bietet einen Überblick der textlichen und musikalischen Merkmale, die Wissenschaftler bisher benutzt haben um die Offizien zu datieren. Diese Charakteristika wurden für die sieben lokalen Heiligen angewandt, wie auch für die Offizien der acht Heiligen, die in der Diözese von Trier verehrt wurden. Die Analyse und die Transkriptionen dieser Offizien dienen als ein Beitrag der Forschung zur Tradition der liturgischen Heiligenverehrung. Die Arbeit untersucht, wie sich die lokalen Offizien musikalisch entwickelt haben und setzen diese in einen europäischen Zusammenhang; insbesondere die des späteren Repertoires und speziell derer, die in der Kathedrale von Trier gesungen wurden.
