Abstract (English)
Initial data sets (g, k) on a manifold M consist of a Riemannian metric g and a symmetric 2-tensor k on M. Their name strives from the fact that they constitute the gravitational initial data for the Cauchy problem of general relativity. The idea is that M should be contained as a spacelike hypersurface within a time-oriented Lorentzian manifold and that g is the induced metric and k the induced second fundamental form – the latter being a geometric version of the first derivative of g in the timelike normal direction.
Not all initial data sets can be considered to be physically reasonable. A restriction is given by the dominant energy condition, which implies that ρ ≥ |j|, where the energy and momentum density ρ and j are computed from (g, k) via the so-called constraint equations. We note that in the case k = 0 this condition reduces to scal g ≥ 0. Much is known about positive (and non-negative) scalar curvature on compact Riemannian manifolds and many of these results were obtained using Dirac operator methods. It is the idea of this thesis to extend these spinorial techniques to the setting of initial data sets with the aim of understanding the dominant energy condition ρ ≥ |j| better and, ultimately, being able to say something about general relativity.
The thesis is comprised of three articles. The first one deals with the C^∞-space of initial data sets subject to the strict condition ρ > |j|. We show that this space often has many non-zero homotopy groups. The non-trivial elements in these groups are obtained via a suspension construction out of certain known non-trivial elements in the homotopy groups of the space of positive scalar curvature metrics. While non-triviality of the latter is detected by Hitchin’s index difference, we construct a similar index difference for initial data sets that is able to show that the former are non-zero.
A special case of this argument from the first article shows that if the so-called α-index of the manifold M is non-zero, then initial data sets with tr(k) > 0 and the ones with tr(k) < 0 belong to different connected components of the space of initial data sets under consideration. This is interesting because, in a certain sense, it rules out Lorentzian manifolds with Cauchy hypersurface M satisfying a strict dominant energy condition and having both a big bang and a big crunch singularity. Since a non-zero α-index obstructs positive scalar curvature, one might wonder whether a similar conclusion also holds for other obstructions of positive scalar curvature. In the second article we show that this is indeed the case for Gromov and Lawson’s enlargeability obstruction, which is effective for a huge class of examples.
For the third article we switch the perspective and look at a single initial data set. This time also the equality case in the inequality ρ ≥ |j| is allowed. In fact, we will assume that the manifold M has boundary and impose conditions on the boundary such that we end up in a rigid situation in which the equality has to hold everywhere. One motivation to study this rigid setup is that it is very similar to the settings that need to be ruled out when trying to extend the results from the first article to the non-strict case ρ ≥ |j|.
Another motivation is that it leads to rigidity of the Lorentzian manifold in which the initial data set is contained. This is explained in the introductory chapter, where also the relation of the other results to relativity theory is described.

Als Anfangswertmenge auf einer Mannigfaltigkeit M bezeichnen wir Paare (g, k) bestehend aus einer riemannschen Metrik g und einem symmetrischen 2-Tensor k auf M. Der Begriff leitet sich daraus ab, dass sie den Gravitationsteil der Anfangswerte für das Cauchy-Problem der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie darstellen. Die Idee ist dabei, dass M als raumartige Hyperfläche in einer zeitorientierten Lorentzmannigfaltigkeit enthalten sein soll, wobei g die darauf induzierte Metrik und k die darauf induzierte zweite Fundamentalform ist. Letztere ist als geometrische Version der ersten Ableitung von g in zeitartige Normalenrichtung zu sehen.
Nicht alle Anfangswertmengen können als physikalisch sinnvoll angesehen werden. Eine Einschränkung ergibt sich aus der dominanten Energiebedingung, die ρ ≥ |j| impliziert, wobei sich Energie- und Impulsdichte ρ und j aus (g, k) mit den sogenannten Einstein-Zwangsbedingungen berechnen lassen. Im Fall k = 0 reduziert sich diese Bedingungen auf scal ≥ 0. Über positive (und nicht-negative) Skalarkrümmung auf kompakten riemannschen Mannigfaltigkeiten ist vieles bekannt und etliche Resultate dafür wurden mittels Dirac-Operator-Methoden erzielt. Die Idee dieser Arbeit ist es, diese spinoriellen Techniken auf das Anfangswert-Setting auszudehnen. Das Ziel ist dabei, die dominante Energiebedingung ρ ≥ |j| besser zu verstehen und letzten Endes Aussagen in der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie treffen zu können.
Diese Arbeit setzt sich aus drei Artikeln zusammen. Der erste beschäftigt sich mit dem C^∞-Raum der Anfangswertmengen, die der strikten Bedingung ρ > |j| genügen. Wir zeigen, dass dieser Raum oftmals viele nicht-verschwindende Homotopiegruppen besitzt. Die nicht-trivialen Elemente in diesen Gruppen erhält man mit Hilfe einer Einhängungskonstruktion aus bestimmten bekannten nicht-trivialen Elementen in den Homotopiegruppen des Raums der positiven Skalarkrümmungsmetriken. Die Nicht-Trivialität letzterer wird von Hitchins Indexdifferenz detektiert wird; für erstere konstruieren wir zu diesem Zweck eine ähnliche Indexdifferenz für Anfangswertmengen.
Ein Spezialfall dieses Arguments des ersten Artikels zeigt, dass wenn der sogenannte α-Index der Mannigfaltigkeit M nicht null ist, dass dann die Anfangswertmengen mit tr(k) > 0 und diejenigen mit tr(k) < 0 in verschiedenen Zusammenhangskomponenten des betrachteten Raums der Anfangswertmengen liegen. Das ist interessant, weil es in gewissem Sinne die Existenz von Lorentzmannigfaltigkeiten mit Cauchyhyperfläche M ausschließt, die der strikten dominanten Energiebedingung genügen und sowohl eine Urknall- als auch eine Endkollaps-Singularität besitzen. Weil nicht-verschwindender α-Index positiver Skalarkrümmung entgegen steht, kann man sich fragen, ob eine ähnliche Schlussfolgerung auch für andere Obstruktionen von positiver Skalarkrümmung gilt. Im zweiten Artikel zeigen wir, dass das für die Vergrößerbarkeits-Obstruktion von Gromov und Lawson in der Tat der Fall ist. Diese ist für eine große Klasse von Beispielen anwendbar.
Im dritten Artikel ändern wir die Perspektive und betrachten eine einzelne Anfangswertmenge. Dieses Mal ist auch der Gleichheitsfall in der Ungleichung ρ ≥ |j| erlaubt. Genau genommen nehmen wir an, dass die Mannigfaltigkeit M einen Rand besitzt, und stellen entlang des Rands Bedingungen, die uns in einer starren Situation enden lassen, in der überall Gleichheit herrschen muss. Eine Motivation, dieses starre Setup zu untersuchen, ist, dass es sehr ähnlich zu den Situationen ist, die ausgeschlossen werden müssen, wenn man versucht, die Resultate des ersten Artikels auf nicht strikten Fall ρ ≥ |j| auszudehnen.
Eine weitere Motivation ist, dass es zu einer Starrheit derjenigen Lorentzmannigfaltigkeit führt, in der die Anfangswertmenge enthalten ist. Dies wird im Einführungskapitel erläutert, in dem auch das Verhältnis der anderen Resultate zur Relativitätstheorie beschrieben wird.
