Autotrophic carbon fixation was characterized in representative members of the three lineages of the bacterial phylum Aquificae. Enzyme activity measurements and the detection of key genes demonstrated that Aquificae use the reductive tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle for autotrophic CO2 fixation.
