Sleep is an active recovery process, characterized by immobility and reduced reactivity to external stimuli. During sleep we find an altered state of consciousness and activity. Motor activity is, beside a general reduction, characterized by an absence of target-oriented movements. Sleep is an inconsistent state, mainly characterized by the alternation between REM and NREM sleep. During sleep, states of consciousness appear with different intensities. Vital regenerative processes occur during sleep. The occurrence of sleep is governed by biological rhythms, which influence almost all bodily functions. These rhythms dictate the optimal time for sleep. Sleep at this time bridges a trough in the organism and allows the activation of recovery processes. The biological rhythms are regulated by an internal clock mechanism. Thus sleep can be described as an active process characterized by alternations between states of rest and activity of the different bodily and mental functions. Apart from humans, all living organism are governed by these rhythms. The natural course of sleep is a basic prerequisite for well being, health and performance.
