This chapter reviews recent experimental work on the role of retrieval inhibition in autobiographical and episodic memory. Retrieval inhibition in autobiographical and episodic memory can arise involuntarily as well as voluntarily. Evidence for involuntary inhibition has been reported in studies that show that the retrieval of information can cause forgetting of related non-retrieved information. Voluntary inhibition has been reported in studies that show that the presentation of a forget cue can impair later recall of unwished or out-of-date information. The role of these findings for understanding and theory development in autobiographical memory is discussed.
