Im Laufe ihres Studiums werden Studierende immer wieder mit der Situation konfrontiert, sich in selbstgesteuerten Lernphasen Inhalte mit Hilfe verschiedener Informationsquellen selbst erarbeiten zu müssen (Wild, 2000, 2018). Das Internet ist mittlerweile sowohl bei Wissenschaftler*innen als auch bei Studierenden zur Hauptquelle für wissenschaftsbezogene Informationen geworden (Maier & Richter, 2013). Bei der Recherche im Internet kann man allerdings auf ganz verschiedene Arten von Informationsquellen stoßen: von wissenschaftlicher Originalliteratur bis hin zu Lehrbüchern oder auch Skripten. Diese Informationsquellen eignen sich mehr oder weniger dazu, bestimmte Verarbeitungsziele zu erreichen. Dafür sind sie aber auch mit vergleichsweise kleinen oder großen kognitiven Anforderungen verbunden. Bei der Auswahl von Informationsquellen verfügen die Studierenden über hohe Freiheitsgrade. Daher ist davon auszugehen, dass Studierende im Sinne von Erwartungs-Wert-Modellen abwägen, welche Informationsquellen sie nutzen wollen, um bestimmte Verarbeitungsziele zu erreichen. Eine eher extrinsische Wert-Komponente besteht dabei aus Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen für die Informationsquellen (z.B. Eccles et al., 1983; Möller & Schiefele, 2004; siehe Kapitel 3.2.3, 3.2.4 und 5.1) bei einem bestimmten Verarbeitungsziel. Eine eher intrinsisch geprägte Wert-Komponente stellen die intrinsischen Anreize zum Umgang mit Informationsquellen (z.B. Eccles et al., 1983; Möller & Schiefele, 2004; siehe Kapitel 3.2.3, 3.2.4 und 5.2) dar. Die Erwartungs-Komponente besteht dabei aus der Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung (z.B. Bandura, 1997; siehe Kapitel 4) beim Umgang mit bestimmten Informationsquellen. Als zusätzliche Einflussfaktoren können motivationale Studienorientierungen (z.B. Möller & Schiefele, 2004; Kapitel 6.1) angenommen werden.
In der vorliegenden Arbeit standen folgende Ziele im Vordergrund: (a) die Beschreibung der Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen und der Informationsquellennutzung Studierender in Abhängigkeit von unterschiedlichen Verarbeitungszielen, (b) die Rolle von Fachdisziplin und Studienabschnitt bei der Nutzungshäufigkeit von Informationsquellen und (c) der Einfluss motivationaler Faktoren auf die Nutzungshäufigkeit von Informationsquellen.
Um die angeführten Ziele zu erreichen, wurden insgesamt drei Studien durchgeführt. Die erste Studie umfasste N = 451 Studierende unterschiedlicher Fachdisziplinen, die zweite Studie umfasste N = 66 Studierende unterschiedlicher Fachdisziplinen und die dritte Studie umfasste N = 84 Studierende der Erziehungswissenschaft im ersten Fachsemester. Bei den ersten beiden Studien sollte dieses in der Forschung sehr neue Gebiet zunächst einmal in der Breite verschiedener Fachdisziplinen betrachtet werden. Die dritte Studie konzentrierte sich auf Studienanfänger*innen eines einzelnen Fachs, um das motivationale Modell noch einmal in einer homogenen Gruppe zu testen.
Insgesamt zeigte sich bei den Studierenden eine Diskrepanz zwischen den Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen und dem tatsächlichen Nutzungsverhalten von Informationsquellen. Die Fachdisziplinen und Studienabschnitte stellten sich als wichtige Einflussfaktoren für das Nutzungsprofil von Informationsquellen heraus. Es zeigte sich zudem, dass die Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen der wichtigste Prädiktor für die Vorhersage der Nutzungshäufigkeit von Informationsquellen sind. Des Weiteren verfügen Modelle, welche die betrachteten motivationalen Faktoren mit einbeziehen, über eine gute Vorhersagekraft bezüglich der Nutzungshäufigkeit von Informationsquellen. Die angenommenen Interaktionseffekte zwischen Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen und intrinsischen/extrinsischen Studienorientierungen beziehungsweise intrinsischer Anreize auf die Nutzungshäufigkeit konnten nur für einige Informationsquellen nachgewiesen werden. Insgesamt wurde aber deutlich, dass eine hohe intrinsische Motivation gepaart mit hohen Nützlichkeitseinschätzungen für eine Informationsquelle bei einem bestimmten Verarbeitungsziel zu den höchsten Nutzungshäufigkeiten führt, unabhängig von der betrachteten Informationsquelle.

In the process of studying students are often confronted with the situation of gathering content in phases of self-regulated learning by using different information sources (Wild, 2000, 2018). The Internet has become the main source of information for scientists as well as for students by now (Maier & Richter, 2013). The enquiry in the Internet may give many different types of information sources: from primary scientific literature to textbooks or even scripts. These information sources are more or less suitable to accomplish particular processing goals. In return they are connected with comparatively little or major cognitive requirements. When selecting information sources students have a huge degree of freedom. It can be assumed that students deliberate about which information sources they want to use to achieve their processing goals in terms of expectancy-value-models. A rather extrinsic value component consists of utility ratings of the information sources (e.g. Eccles et al., 1983; Möller & Schiefele, 2004; see chapter 3.2.3, 3.2.4 and 5.1) for particular processing goals. A rather intrinsic value component consists of intrinsic incentives for the use of information sources (e.g. Eccles et al., 1983; Möller & Schiefele, 2004; see chapter 3.2.3, 3.2.4 and 5.2). The expectation component consists of self-efficacy expectation (e.g. Bandura, 1997; see chapter 4) for the use of information sources. Motivational study orientations can be expected as additional influencing factors (e.g. Möller & Schiefele, 2004; see chapter 6.1).
This thesis had the following central aims: (a) the description of the utility ratings for different information sources as well as their frequency of use in dependence on varied processing goals, (b) the effect of study discipline and study phase for the frequency of use of information sources and (c) the influence of motivational factors for the frequency of use of information sources.
Three studies were conducted to achieve the claimed goals. The first study included N = 451 students of variable study disciplines, the second study included N = 66 students of variable study disciplines and the third study included N = 84 students of Educational Science in their first semester. With the first two studies this relatively new area of research should be examined in a wide breadth. The third study concentrated on first-year students to test the motivational model once more in a homogeneous group.
Overall appeared a discrepancy between the utility ratings and the actual behaviour of using information sources. The study discipline and the study phase turned out to be important factors for the profile of using information sources. In addition, the utility ratings turned out to be the most important predictor for the frequency of use of information sources. Furthermore, it turned out that models which included motivational factors can predict the frequency of us of information sources quite well. The assumed interaction effects between usability ratings and intrinsic/extrinsic study orientations respectively intrinsic incentives for the frequency of use could only be detected for some information sources. Altogether it became apparent that high intrinsic motivation paired with high utility ratings for an information source for a particular processing goal lead to the highest frequencies of use despite of the considered information source.
