Abstract (English)
Calculating the convex envelope of multivariate functions plays an important role in optimization and hence in many fields of applied mathematics, physics and mechanics. It is well known that the convex envelope of some lower semi−continuous, superlinear growing function f: ℝᵈ→ ℝ in some point x∈ ℝᵈ can be obtained by affine interpolation of function values f in not necessarily unique points x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾∈ ℝᵈ with n≤ d+1. If these points are unique and affine independent, the simplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾} is called the phase simplex of x. Seeking to calculate the convex envelope of f in a neighbourhood of x, a natural approach is to vary the vertices of the phase simplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾} of x within respective neighbourhoods U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾ of x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾, looking for further phase simplices. We show that this procedure succeeds whenever the phase simplex of x is maximal in the sense, that it is not the face of a larger phase simplex of some other point x', and f is differentiable and strictly convex in each neighbourhood U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾. We derive a continuous parametrization of a neighbourhood of the simplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾}, such that we can give an expression of the convex envelope in this neighbourhood in terms of the parametrization. This parametrization especially characterizes all involved phase simplices of any dimension. Additionally, we show that the regularity of this parametrization improves to Lipschitz−continuity, if the restriction of f to each neighbourhood U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾ has Lipschitz−continuous gradient and is strongly convex.

Die Berechnung konvexer Hüllen von multivariaten Funktionen spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der Optimierung und damit in vielen Gebieten der angewandten Mathematik. Es ist wohlbekannt, dass sich die konvexe Hülle einer unterhalbstetigen, superlinear wachsenden Funktion f: ℝᵈ→ ℝ, in einem Punkt x∈ ℝᵈ durch affine Interpolation von Funktionswerten von f in nicht notwendigerweise eindeutigen Punkten x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾∈ ℝᵈ mit n≤ d+1 ergibt. Sofern diese Punkte eindeutig und affin unabhängig sind, so nennt man den Simplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾} den Phasensimplex von x. Ein intuitiver Ansatz für die Berechnung der konvexen Hülle von f in einer Umgebung von x, ist die Variation der Eckpunkte des Phasensimplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾} von x in jeweiligen Umgebungen U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾ von x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾ um weitere Phasensimplizes zu erhalten. Wir zeigen, dass diese Vorgehensweise erfolgreich ist, sofern der Phasensimplex von x maximal ist, in dem Sinne, dass er keine Seitenfläche eines größeren Phasensimplex eines anderen Punktes x' darstellt, sowie f differenzierbar und strikt konvex in jeder Umgebung U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾ ist. Wir konstruieren eine stetige Parametrisierung einer Umgebung des Simplex conv{x⁽¹⁾, ..., x⁽ⁿ⁾}, sodass der Ausdruck für die konvexe Hülle in dieser Umgebung durch konstruierte Parametrisierung dargestellt werden kann. Speziell werden durch diese Parametrisierung alle Phasensimplizes beliebiger Dimension charakterisiert, welche für die Konstruktion der konvexen Hülle in der entsprechenden Umgebung notwendig sind. Zusätzlich zeigen wir, dass sich die Regularität der Parametrisierung zu Lipschitz−Stetigkeit verbessert, sofern die Einschränkung von f auf jede Umgebung U⁽¹⁾, ..., U⁽ⁿ⁾ einen Lipschitz−stetigen Gradienten besitzt und stark konvex ist.
